    Conductor to watch

Just learned that an old classmate finished Julliard. He's got a website, but it needs to add more up-to-date where-is-Jonathan-conducting:

Jonathan Schiffman has emerged as one of the most promising young conductors on the international scene. His career was launched in September 2004 as a result of winning 1st Prize, at age 27, in the 8th Antonio Pedrotti International Conducting Competition. The critics praised Mr. Schiffman as possessing a rare combination of "uncontestable musicality and impeccable technique". As a result, guest conducting engagements followed with most major Italian orchestras.
The last concert I saw was in March or April--Rostropovich conducting the San Francisco Symphony. It was all Shostakovich (who Rostropovich was friends with, I believe). Not all that interesting, actually, though I love listening to Rostropovich play.
